description - Notes

Savory Simulations combines cooking toys with the digital projection of animated foods, augmenting the restaurant games we used to play as children. When I was little, my brothers and I would create restaurants with a menu of toy foods. We would go to each other's restaurant and order as many meals as we want because we would pay each other with Monopoly money. It is a core memory of mine, and I missed playing restaurants. Playful Reminiscence is a series of animations that use projection mapping to convey nostalgia and play. Since we live in a capitalistic society, many adults are working endlessly to make ends meet. This results in fatigue, burnout, and loss of time. Due to the stressors of adulthood, I turn to the joyful moments of my childhood for comfort. By exploring nostalgia in playful depictions, users may return to innocent and happy memories of the past. When I started this project, I had little to no knowledge of projection mapping. However, I was always curious on how it worked and the endless possibilities it can do. So, I figured why not explore nostalgia and play through projection mapping. I wanted to learn Madmapper. My research question was "How can I convey nostalgia and play onto projection mapping?"

Savory Simulations was heavily inspired by the restaurant games my brothers and I would play when we were little. Although we had many fights on cooking "equipment," I loved making dynamic restaurants. I remember I hosted a smoothie place called Java Junction (inspired by The Next Step show) and another cafe named Sana Ol (means "I wish" in Tagalog).
