Ligaya AR

description - Notes
Ligaya is an augmented reality (AR) project that addresses immigration and cultural loss, focusing on the Philippines. It is a replication of a Philippines street, where spectators are encouraged to walk around and interact with Filipino culture. There are seven artifacts, and each one is tied to a specific story in my childhood or a family member's experience - all recordings are available in English and Tagalog. Since Ligaya is accessible anywhere through Hoverlay, this gives the audience an opportunity to integrate Filipino Culture into a Canadian space, strengthening a connection between the two. When I was about 6 years old, my parents and I moved to Canada, distancing us from family, friends, and authentic Filipino culture. It led to consequences such as losing culture, distant relationships, and the inability to return to the Philippines (for awhile). Ligaya was made to connect Filipino and non-Filipino participants to cultural values and traditions in a virtual lens. Ligaya participated in many exhibitions like Nuit Blanche Regina 2023, Frost Regina 2024, and the Cathedral Arts Festival in 2024. Try it out now! I remember watching a documentary in a Women and Genders Studies (WGST) class. It showed a woman who worked as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in the United States. Since she was the only one eligible to move, she left her husband and children in the Philippines. There was a moment where she was facetiming her family back home, and they were all crying. It broke my heart when she started reassuring her son that she will come home soon. After seeing that, I was inspired to pursue immigration and cultural loss as a topic.

The first step involved sketching each artifact and storyboarding in my notebook. After finalizing the concepts, I built each artifact in Blender (parol, karaoke, taho, sorbetes, fishball, basketball, BBQ and isaw). I do want to mention that my family and friends participated profoundly in Ligaya. For the audio stories, my mom and brother recorded in English and Tagalog. My dad and aunties shared stories about the Philippines, while my little brother helped with foley. After gathering all my assets, I worked in Hoverlay to make Ligaya interactive!
