After finalizing the storyline in my sketchbook, I created a storyboard with quick drawings of how I wanted each scene to play out. Then, I built the bedroom scene (inspired by my room) followed by character design and rigging. During this, my brothers and I recorded audio lines for each scene. After that, I dove into animating characters - it probably took my 2 weeks and was the hardest step. Once I exported each camera, I added all scenes into Premiere Pro for the final edit and mix.

Breakdown of steps:

  1. Brainstorming & Sketching

  2. Storyboarding

  3. Recording and Editing Audio Lines

  4. Building and Rigging 3D Scene and Models

  5. Animating

  6. Export to Edit

DARE is heavily inspired by the Toy Story trilogy. I loved the idea of toys coming to life and having their own agency. Each movie shows the importance of friendship and loyalty. Especially, in the last two movies, we see a "coming of age," where the toys must cope with change and adapt. It simply shows how to navigate through life's unpredictability and challenges.

description - Notes

DARE is about a wooden man, Cedar, who has lived on a desk all his life. Same thing everyday. Same routine everyday. Same everything. He has never moved until one miraculous afternoon. One taste of freedom pushes him to escape the never-ending cycle of life.  DARE grapples with the question: should you take the safe route or dare to risk the fear? The desk is all Cedar knows. It's all he has ever experienced. What if there is more life outside of this room? The owner of the room is moving out, and this is Cedar's chance to escape. With little time left, he must decide if he will stay or leave. As an overthinker, it has always been hard for me to take risks. I always get stuck on "what if's." What if this happens? What if I don't like it? What if I fail? Negativity clouds my mind, and it makes me scared to take that leap. For example, my first major was Computer Science. During my second semester, I took an animation course as an elective, and I fell in love with it. I wanted to continue making animation, but I couldn't do that with a Comp Sci degree. I had a decision to make. My parents told me not to switch. A part of me was scared. But I followed my heart and pursued Creative Technologies. If I didn't switch, I wouldn't be where I am right now. So...moral of the story: take risks because you never know what will happen.
